South African rugby’s oldest domestic competition is delivering exactly the kind of drama Currie Cup fans have come to expect.

With five rounds of the 2026 Carling Currie Cup Premier Division completed, defending champions Suzuki Griquas and the Toyota Cheetahs sit level on 21 log points. The Airlink Pumas and Sanlam Boland Kavaliers are also firmly in the hunt, while the teams chasing the final semi-final places have very little room for error.

The Toyota Cheetahs were involved in a very different kind of contest at Loftus Versfeld. They eventually beat the Vodacom Bulls XV 62-52 in a remarkable 114-point thriller.

The Cheetahs raced into a 47-17 half-time lead and extended that advantage to 59-17 before the Bulls launched an incredible second-half comeback. The Pretoria side scored repeatedly to get back into the contest, but the Cheetahs held on for a nine-try victory.

Michael Annies and Prince Nkabinde both scored twice, while Cohen Jasper also crossed twice for the Free State side.

The other Round Five results were just as important to the play-off race.

Boland Cavaliers came from 17-0 down to beat the Lions 38-29, while the Pumas strengthened their semi-final challenge with a 29-7 victory over Stormers XXIII in Mbombela.

Currie Cup Log: The Top Four Is Taking Shape

After five rounds, the Currie Cup log looks like this:

Griquas sit top of the log on points difference, with the Cheetahs level on 21 points. The Pumas are only four points behind the leaders, while Boland are another point back.

That means the top four is far from settled.

The Lions, Stormers XXIII and Sharks XV are also still mathematically alive, although they need to put together wins quickly. Even the Bulls have not been officially eliminated at this stage, although their position is extremely difficult with only two rounds remaining.

The 2026 Currie Cup Premier Division features eight teams: the four South African URC franchises and the four leading qualifiers from the SA Cup. If I had to choose one today, Griquas would get the nod. They are the defending champions, they currently lead the log and they have been particularly impressive at home in Kimberley.

Round Six gets underway on Friday, 21 August, with three matches on the schedule.

The round concludes on Sunday when the Cheetahs host Boland Cavaliers at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.
