Team South Africa Making Waves at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games are well underway, and Team South Africa has already given Mzansi plenty to smile about. After the opening four days of competition, the green and gold have made a flying start, with the swimming team once again leading the charge and proving why South Africa remains one of the Commonwealth’s strongest nations in the pool.

Ja, the medals are already rolling in, and if the opening few days are anything to go by, Team SA could be in for one of its strongest Commonwealth Games campaigns in recent memory.

If there was any doubt about where South Africa’s early success would come from, the swimmers answered that question almost immediately.

Veteran Chad le Clos added yet another chapter to his incredible Commonwealth Games career when he helped South Africa claim a medal in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay. The result saw him collect his 19th Commonwealth Games medal. This makes him the most decorated male athlete in Commonwealth Games history. Surpassing the previous record shared with Australian shooter Phillip Adams and England’s Mick Gault.

Not bad for a oke who’s still showing the youngsters how it’s done.

However, the real star of the opening week has been Pieter Coetze.

The 22-year-old backstroke specialist produced one of the performances of the Games by smashing the Commonwealth Games record in the men’s 50m backstroke three times first in the heats, then the semi-finals, and finally the final to storm home with the gold medal.

To make things even sweeter for Team SA. Ruard van Renen grabbed the bronze medal in the same race, giving South Africa two athletes on the podium.

The medals kept coming in the relay events too. South Africa earned another bronze in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, while the women’s relay squad fought their way onto the podium with bronze after an excellent team performance.

Coetze wasn’t done there either. Shortly after claiming gold, he comfortably qualified for the 200m backstroke final as one of the fastest swimmers. Giving South African supporters another genuine gold medal opportunity.

Australia once again sits comfortably at the top of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games medal table, while England and hosts Scotland continue to battle for second place.

Team South Africa remains firmly in the hunt inside the leading group of nations. Trading positions with countries such as Canada, Nigeria and New Zealand as more medal events are completed.

There is still plenty of competition left, and with athletics, boxing, weightlifting and several swimming finals still to come, Team SA has every chance of climbing further up the standings.

South Africa will also be looking to improve on its Birmingham 2022 performance, where the team finished ninth overall with seven gold medals and 27 medals in total.

Since returning to the Commonwealth Games in 1994, South Africa has amassed well over 400 Commonwealth Games medals, with swimming consistently providing the biggest haul.

If there’s one thing South African supporters know, it’s that our athletes never shy away from a challenge. Whether it’s on the track, in the pool or in the boxing ring, Team SA usually finds a way to produce a few goosebump moments.

South Africa returns to the city where it enjoyed one of its finest Commonwealth Games campaigns, winning 40 medals, including 13 gold, in Glasgow back in 2014. After collecting 27 medals in Birmingham 2022, the lowest total since returning to the Games in 1994, the mission is simple: improve, compete hard and bring a few more medals back home.

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) has selected a 112-member squad consisting of 59 women and 53 men, led by Chef de Mission Bongiwe Msomi.

While the swimmers have carried the load so far, there are still plenty of opportunities for South African athletes to add to the medal tally.

One of the biggest hopes is Lara van Niekerk. She returns to defend the breaststroke titles she won at Birmingham 2022. If she finds her best form, another Commonwealth Games gold is well within reach.

The men’s breaststroke squad also looks dangerous, with Michael Houlie qualifying fastest for the 50m breaststroke final, while Chris Smith safely progressed through the heats.

Elsewhere in the pool, Erin Gallagher and Dune Coetzee continue South Africa’s challenge in the butterfly events and remain genuine podium contenders.

Outside the swimming programme, there’s still plenty for South African fans to get excited about.

Boxing

South Africa’s boxing squad has started positively, with Masibulele Sigwela progressing through the men’s 55kg competition. The boxers have a history of producing surprise medals when it matters most, so don’t write them off just yet.

Weightlifting

Team SA has qualified six lifters for Glasgow, split evenly between the men’s and women’s categories. Weightlifting has quietly become one of South Africa’s more consistent medal opportunities at major multi-sport events.

Athletics

The athletics programme is only getting underway, and this is traditionally where South Africa begins adding medals in bunches. With a strong squad across the jumps, sprints and middle-distance events, supporters will be hoping for another big showing.

Gymnastics, Netball and Lawn Bowls

South Africa also has realistic medal hopes in artistic gymnastics, lawn bowls and netball, where experienced competitors know exactly what it takes to perform under pressure.

The squad features more than 100 athletes competing across 10 sports, including the fully integrated para-sport programme, showcasing both established champions and exciting young talent ready to announce themselves on the international stage.

The opening few days have belonged to South Africa’s swimmers, but the Games are far from over.

With athletics about to explode into life, boxing entering the knockout rounds and more swimming finals still on the schedule, Team SA has every opportunity to climb the medal table.
