Kruger United and Milford FC Book Their Place in South Africa’s Betway Premiership

South African football has two brand-new clubs to welcome into the Betway Premiership for the 2026/27 season. Kruger United and Milford FC have both completed incredible promotion campaigns, earning the right to rub shoulders with the country’s biggest football clubs.

For supporters, it’s always lekker to see fresh blood in the PSL. New rivalries, packed stadiums, road trips and plenty of gees are on the cards. While Magesi FC and Orbit College make the drop to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, Kruger United and Milford FC will be hoping they can prove they belong among South Africa’s football elite.

Kruger United’s rise has been one of the great South African football stories of recent years.

The Bushbuckridge-based club, affectionately known as The Village Boys, was established in 2023. After local businessmen Bongani Wati and Basil Khoza acquired the SAFA Second Division status of Caroline FC.

Instead of taking years to climb the football pyramid, Kruger United wasted no time. After earning promotion into the professional ranks, they produced an outstanding 2025/26 Motsepe Foundation Championship campaign.

Their title-winning season was wrapped up with two games remaining. Following a convincing 3-1 victory over Black Leopards at KaNyamazane Stadium. Kruger United finished on 62 points from 30 matches, comfortably ahead of challengers including Milford FC, Hungry Lions, Casric Stars and Cape Town City.

It’s a proper fairytale story. From a village project to the Betway Premiership in just a few years, not bad, hey?

Kruger United now become only the second Mpumalanga club in the Betway Premiership alongside TS Galaxy, giving football supporters in the province another team to get behind.

Head coach Abram Mongoya deserves plenty of credit for building a disciplined and organised side. The club has also strengthened its technical team by appointing experienced coach Joel Masutha as assistant coach ahead of the new campaign.

On the field, experienced players such as Tercious Malepe, Wandisile Letlabika, Ebrahim Seedat, Morné Nel, Ntsako Makhubela and Celimpilo Ngema played massive roles throughout the season. Combining top-flight experience with the hunger of a developing squad.

Kruger United will most likely play their home matches at KaNyamazane Stadium. Although the venue will still need to meet the Premier Soccer League’s stadium compliance requirements before the new season begins.

Joining Kruger United in the Betway Premiership are Milford FC, whose promotion came the hard way through the PSL Promotion/Relegation Playoffs.

The Richards Bay outfit, known as The Stallions, secured promotion after finishing top of the mini-league. Their decisive result came in a 1-1 draw against Magesi FC, with a late equaliser proving enough to send Milford into the top flight while Magesi were relegated.

Talk about keeping supporters on the edge of their seats. That’s proper South African football drama.

Founded in 2012 by Dr Xanti BS Pupuma, Milford have steadily worked their way through the South African football system. The club eventually entered the professional ranks after acquiring Tongaat FC’s league status and has continued to grow ever since.

Dr Pupuma’s story is just as remarkable as the club’s. A qualified medical doctor, he has also served as owner and head coach during much of Milford’s journey. He helped guide the club from humble beginnings to the Betway Premiership.

Midfielder Menzi Chili became the hero of the promotion campaign. After he scored the crucial goal against Magesi FC that booked Milford’s place in the top division.

Captain Mjabulise Mkhize, together with experienced players like Cheswyn Philander and Nqaba Xulu, also made significant contributions throughout the season.

Milford are expected to host their home matches at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay, subject to final PSL venue approval ahead of the new season.

The arrival of Kruger United and Milford FC gives the Betway Premiership something every football supporter enjoys. New stories, passionate communities and clubs with everything to prove.

Nobody expects life in the top flight to be easy. Every week they’ll be up against the likes of Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and the rest of South Africa’s football heavyweights. It’s a different ball game altogether.

But football has a funny way of producing surprises. Every season there’s a club that refuses to read the script.
