IPL 2026: The World’s Biggest Cricket Show Returns

The 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) officially the TATA IPL is back! And once again it’s set to dominate the global cricket calendar. Now well into its second decade, the IPL remains the richest and most-watched T20 league in the world. It blends elite international talent with India’s best in a high-intensity, entertainment-driven format.

The 2026 season runs from late March through May. It features 10 franchises and a packed schedule of league matches, double-headers and blockbuster clashes. For South African fans, it’s prime-time viewing and from a betting perspective, one of the most action-packed tournaments of the year.

The Format

All 10 teams play 14 matches each in the league phase. Facing opponents both home and away within a structured group format. At the end of the round-robin stage, the top four teams advance to the playoffs.

The playoff system remains one of the IPL’s strengths. The top two teams get a second bite at the cherry via Qualifier 1, with the winner advancing straight to the final. Third and fourth place meet in the Eliminator, with the winner progressing to Qualifier 2 to face the loser of Qualifier 1 for the remaining spot in the final. It rewards consistency while still keeping the door open for late surges.

A Brief History: Who Has Won It All?

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians remain the benchmark franchises, with five titles each, setting the standard for sustained excellence in the IPL era.

Kolkata Knight Riders have established themselves as a major force with multiple titles, while teams like Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans have all had their moments of glory.

The IPL has always delivered storylines from Rajasthan Royals’ fairytale win in the inaugural 2008 season. Under Shane Warne, to Mumbai’s era of dominance, to the constant near-misses of Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Important correction: As of now, Royal Challengers Bengaluru have not won an IPL title. They have reached multiple finals but are still chasing their first trophy. One of the league’s longest-running narratives.

The Ten Teams

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)

Still one of the most supported teams in world cricket, RCB continue to build around Virat Kohli. They’ve got star power, but the big question remains: can they finally get over the line?

Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK remain one of the most consistent teams in IPL history. And yes, every season could still be the last dance for MS Dhoni which always adds extra attention.

Mumbai Indians (MI)

With Hardik Pandya at the helm and Rohit Sharma still in the setup, MI are always a threat. When they click, they’re as dangerous as anyone.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

KKR continue to rely on a strong core and match-winners like Sunil Narine, who remains one of the most impactful T20 players in the world.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

Led by Pat Cummins, SRH have embraced an aggressive, high-scoring style that makes them one of the most entertaining sides to watch.

Delhi Capitals (DC)

Still chasing their first title, DC have shown flashes of brilliance over the years but need consistency to go all the way.

Punjab Kings (PBKS)

Perennial underachievers with talent on paper, Punjab remain one of the toughest teams to predict dangerous, but inconsistent.

Gujarat Titans (GT)

One of the best-run franchises since joining the league, GT boast a balanced squad featuring stars like Kagiso Rabada a key figure for SA fans.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)

Led by Rishabh Pant, LSG are still chasing their first title but have the firepower to go deep.

Rajasthan Royals (RR)

A team that thrives on youth and flair, always capable of upsetting bigger sides on their day.

Teams to Watch in 2026

Gujarat Titans look like one of the most balanced squads on paper. They’ve already proven they can win the IPL and consistently position themselves well for playoff runs. A big factor for bettors looking at outright markets.

Mumbai Indians are never far away. You write them off at your own risk their tournament pedigree speaks for itself. They know exactly how to peak at the business end.

Chennai Super Kings fall into the same category. Experience, structure, and a calm approach under pressure make them perennial contenders.

And then there’s RCB. Every year feels like it could be their year and every year the pressure builds. From a betting angle, they’re often value because of that unpredictability.

From a South African perspective, the IPL remains one of the best tournaments to follow. Not just for the quality, but for the number of Proteas stars involved. With big-money contracts, global audiences and relentless action, this is cricket at its most explosive.
