Europe’s Elite Collide: UEFA Champions League Quarter-Finals Preview & Predictions

The road to Budapest reaches its most electrifying stage this week as the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals get underway. First legs are being played on 7 and 8 April, with the return fixtures scheduled for 14 and 15 April. The four blockbuster matchups are Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid, PSG vs Liverpool, Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich, and Sporting CP vs Arsenal.
With the final set for Budapest’s Puskás Aréna on 30 May, every kick, tackle and goal this week carries enormous weight.
Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich.Tuesday 7 April
It doesn’t get much bigger than this. No two teams have met as often in UEFA competition as Real Madrid and Bayern, with the sides having faced each other 28 times. All in the European Cup/Champions League. The Spanish side lead the head-to-head with 13 wins to Bayern’s 11, along with four draws.
Real Madrid have won the last four UEFA two-legged ties between the sides, most recently a 4-3 aggregate victory in the 2023/24 Champions League semi-finals. And have also won all three previous European Cup/Champions League quarter-final ties between the clubs. The numbers make for grim reading for Bayern, who have lost seven of their last eight UEFA two-legged ties against Spanish teams. League However, Harry Kane who has 14 goals in his last 13 Champions League games has scored in the away leg of Bayern’s quarter-final tie in each of the last two seasons.
Prediction: Real Madrid’s home dominance and superior recent record in this fixture gives them the edge. Expect a tightly contested first leg, with Madrid edging it 2-1, though Kane will find the net.
Sporting CP vs Arsenal. Tuesday 7 April
This tie has an intriguing subplot: Viktor Gyökeres scored six goals in eight Champions League appearances for Sporting CP before joining Arsenal in the summer of 2025. Registering 97 goals in 102 competitive games for the Portuguese club between 2023 and 2025. He now returns to his old hunting ground wearing Gunners red.
History favours Arsenal broadly, as English clubs have won the last ten Champions League two-legged ties against Portuguese opposition. That said, Sporting CP are aiming to become the first Portuguese club to win a Champions League quarter-final tie since Porto in 2003/0. With Portuguese sides having lost nine consecutive quarter-final ties in the competition since then. League Luis Suárez has scored in Sporting CP’s last three Champions League home matches. Giving the Lisbon side a potent attacking threat on their own turf.
Prediction: Arsenal’s squad depth and Gyökeres’ likely point-to-prove mentality makes them favourites. A 2-1 Arsenal away win, with Gyökeres inevitably on the scoresheet.
Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid. Wednesday 8 April
An all-Spanish affair with no shortage of recent needle. Just over a month after losing the Copa del Rey semi-finals against Atlético. Barcelona won their most recent La Liga encounter against them 2-1. In the Champions League, however, it is Atlético who hold the upper hand. All previous UEFA meetings between the two clubs have come in the Champions League quarter-finals, with Atlético winning both ties.
Barcelona have lost only two of their last 18 UEFA home matches and have won each of the most recent four. Scoring 19 goals across those games. Lamine Yamal has scored in Barcelona’s last three Champions League matches. Making him one of the most dangerous players in the competition right now. With Raphinha injured, it will be up to Robert Lewandowski, Yamal and potentially Fermín López to provide the goals. While Gavi and Pedri will need to control the midfield battle which could prove decisive.
Prediction: Barcelona’s home fortress and attacking firepower wins out. A 2-1 Barça victory in a feisty Camp Nou encounter.
PSG vs Liverpool. Wednesday 8 April
The glamour tie of the round. PSG hit eight goals past Chelsea in the previous round, while Liverpool completed a dramatic comeback to eliminate Galatasaray. SuperSport Both teams arrive in blistering form, making this the most unpredictable quarter-final of the lot.
None of Liverpool’s 36 previous UEFA matches against French teams have finished goalless.
That tradition looks set to continue in what promises to be a high-octane, end-to-end affair. Dominik Szoboszlai has scored in five of his last eight Champions League appearances. Giving Liverpool a genuine midfield goal threat to complement their forwards.
Prediction: This one is too close to call, but Liverpool’s experience in tight European ties gives them a slender advantage. A 2-2 draw at the Parc des Princes keeps everything alive for the second leg.
The final match in sight
With household names, historic rivalries and title dreams on the line, this week’s first legs promise to be among the most compelling nights in European football this season.
