Inside the 2026 Betway Premiership: The Story Behind South Africa’s Biggest Soccer League

If you’re a South African soccer fan, you already know there’s nothing quite like a weekend of Betway Premiership action. Whether you’re backing the Buccaneers, Amakhosi, Masandawana or your local underdogs, matchday brings the country to a standstill. From packed stadiums and buzzing shisanyamas to heated debates in the taxi queue, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) remains the heartbeat of South African football.

The sponsorship may have changed over the years, but ask any local supporter and they’ll still tell you they’re watching “the PSL.” Eish, that’s just how it is in Mzansi.

The Premier Soccer League was established in 1996, bringing together professional football under one banner following South Africa’s return to international sport after apartheid. It transformed local soccer into a modern professional competition and helped produce clubs that are recognised across Africa.

Few leagues can match the passion found in the Soweto Derby. Whenever Kaizer Chiefs face Orlando Pirates, the entire country comes alive. Tickets disappear in minutes, social media goes into meltdown and the banter starts days before kick-off. Yoh, if your team loses, you’re hearing about it all week at work.

Over the years, clubs like Mamelodi Sundowns, AmaZulu FC, Golden Arrows, Stellenbosch FC, Sekhukhune United, TS Galaxy, Marumo Gallants and Richards Bay FC have all added their own flavour to the league.

Although the competition has carried different sponsorship names from Castle Premiership and Absa Premiership to DStv Premiership and now the Betway Premiership supporters still proudly call it the PSL.

The 2025/26 Betway Premiership produced one of the closest title races in years.

After dominating South African soccer for almost a decade, Mamelodi Sundowns entered the season chasing an incredible ninth consecutive league title. Most football fans expected Masandawana to do what they always do.

But Orlando Pirates had other ideas.

The Buccaneers put together a brilliant campaign, going on an impressive unbeaten run and eventually edging Sundowns in one of the most exciting finishes the league has seen in years. Their 2-0 victory over Orbit College on the final day secured the championship, ending a wait that stretched back to the 2011/12 season.

For Ghost supporters, it was pure scenes. “Abafana Bes’thende, sizobona next season,” while Pirate fans could finally shout, “The trophy is back where it belongs!”

Pirates finished one point ahead of Sundowns, with both clubs qualifying for the 2026/27 CAF Champions League.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs and Durban City, as Nedbank Cup champions, booked their places in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Golden Arrows striker Junior Dion finished the campaign as the league’s leading goalscorer, while Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine produced several match-winning performances throughout the season.

One of the best things about South African soccer is that every season brings fresh stories.

The 2025/26 campaign welcomed Orbit College to the top flight after earning promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Another new addition was Siwelele FC, who entered the league after acquiring the Premiership status of SuperSport United. While the badge and ownership changed, supporters were eager to see whether the new club could build its own identity.

Durban City also continued their journey in the top flight after emerging from the former Maritzburg United structure, giving KwaZulu-Natal football supporters another club to rally behind.

As always, the bottom of the table produced just as much drama as the title race.

Orbit College’s fairy-tale promotion ended after just one season as they were relegated back to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Their place in next season’s Betway Premiership will be taken by Kruger United, who secured automatic promotion after winning the National First Division title.

Meanwhile, Magesi FC entered the promotion and relegation play-offs alongside Cape Town City and Milford FC.

Milford held their nerve to secure promotion, meaning Magesi dropped into the second tier. Ag shame… that’s football. One season you’re celebrating survival, the next you’re packing for long trips around the NFD.

Football isn’t just a sport in Mzansi, it’s part of our culture.

Every weekend, thousands of supporters fill stadiums across the country, while millions more gather around televisions, watch parties and shisanyamas to support their teams.

You’ll hear debates in every kasi, every office and every taxi rank.
