The biggest talking point of the weekend, however, came in Wellington.

The Sanlam Boland Kavaliers stunned the rugby world with an emphatic 41-3 victory over the DHL Stormers XXIII. It wasn’t just the winning margin that impressed it was the physicality, defensive discpline and confidence with which Boland played.

If anyone still doubted Boland’s credentials, they certainly don’t now.

If you’re only watching one Currie Cup match this weekend, make it this one. The defending champions host one of the competition’s form teams in what could easily become an early playoff preview.

Griquas are always difficult to beat in Kimberley, where the dry conditions and passionate home support make life uncomfortable for visiting teams. The Cheetahs, however, have looked sharp with ball in hand and continue to play an exciting brand of attacking rugby.

This match could ultimately come down to discipline and who controls territory during the closing stages.

Boland suddenly have everyone’s attention.

Their outstanding victory over the Stormers XXIII showed they have the quality to challenge anyone in this year’s competition.

The Pumas won’t roll over. They remain one of South African rugby’s toughest and most physical provincial teams but they’ll need to improve dramatically after last weekend’s defeat.

Home advantage could once again prove decisive.
