Belgian GP Qualifying Preview: Antonelli Favourite as Norris Grid Penalty Shakes Up Spa

Formula 1 returns to one of the most iconic circuits on the calendar this weekend as the Belgian Grand Prix heads to the legendary Spa-Francorchamps.

The 7.004 km circuit is famous for Eau Rouge, Raidillon and the long Kemmel Straight, making qualifying one of the most exciting sessions of the season. Drivers need complete commitment, while teams must strike the perfect balance between low drag for straight-line speed and enough downforce through Spa’s flowing corners.

However, the biggest story ahead of qualifying isn’t just who will claim pole position.

World champion Lando Norris will serve a 10-place grid penalty after McLaren installed a fourth power electronics unit, exceeding Formula 1’s seasonal allocation. McLaren opted to take the penalty at Spa because overtaking is generally easier than at Hungary or Zandvoort, making it the least damaging venue strategically.

That means even if Norris produces the fastest lap in qualifying, he will still drop ten places on Sunday’s starting grid.

Norris still has every reason to attack qualifying.

Starting 11th instead of 20th could make a huge difference on Sunday, especially at Spa where overtaking opportunities are plentiful.

His new Mercedes-supplied power electronics package also includes reliability improvements that McLaren hopes will prevent the failures that disrupted his championship defence earlier this season.

Ferrari have introduced further upgrades for Belgium and Leclerc has traditionally been quick around Spa. If Mercedes falter, he’s arguably the biggest threat for pole.

Hamilton owns five Belgian Grand Prix victories and has always excelled at Spa. While outright pole may be difficult, another front-row challenge is well within reach.

With Norris carrying a penalty, Oscar Piastri becomes McLaren’s best chance of fighting for the front of the grid.
