IPL 2026: Playoff Race Goes Full Beans as Five Massive Fixtures Shake Up the Table

The business end of the IPL 2026 has officially arrived and the playoff race is tighter than a Proteas run chase at the Wanderers. With the tournament running through to May 31. And only a handful of league matches left, every over, wicket and Net Run Rate swing now feels like pure chaos. For South African cricket fans staying up way too late with coffee in hand. The next five days could completely reshape the road to the IPL playoffs.
The State of Play: IPL 2026 Points Table
Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans currently sit level at the top of the IPL table on 16 points, with RCB ahead on Net Run Rate after their dominant win over Kolkata Knight Riders. The race for a top-two finish is massive because it gives teams a second chance through Qualifier 1 and in T20 cricket, that extra lifeline is basically gold.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are sitting comfortably in third on 14 points and look almost certain to qualify with one more win. Punjab Kings currently occupy fourth place, while Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals remain locked on 12 points and very much alive in the playoff hunt.
Meanwhile, KKR’s latest defeat has left them hanging by a thread, and Delhi Capitals are still mathematically alive, although they’ll need results to fall their way faster than load shedding schedules change. Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants are officially out of playoff contention.
Historically, teams usually need around 16 to 18 points to safely secure an IPL playoff spot. Occasionally, 14 points with a strong NRR sneaks a side through, which means the fight for third and fourth place is still properly spicy.
Match 58: Punjab Kings vs Mumbai Indians – May 14, Dharamsala
Punjab Kings head into this clash under serious pressure after a worrying four-match losing streak. A few weeks ago they looked like genuine contenders, but now they’re wobbling harder than a plastic chair at a Sunday braai.
Mumbai Indians may already be eliminated, but that often makes teams dangerous. With no pressure and nothing to lose, MI can play with total freedom and that’s exactly the sort of thing that causes heartbreak in the IPL.
Prediction: Punjab Kings to scrape home in a nervy contest.
Match 59: Lucknow Super Giants vs Chennai Super Kings – May 15, Lucknow
This fixture feels like a must-win for CSK. Lucknow are already out, while Chennai know every point matters from here on out. On paper, CSK should handle business comfortably, but IPL cricket has a nasty habit of humbling favourites. Just ask any Proteas fan who still twitches when hearing the words “semi-final pressure”.
Chennai Super Kings currently hold the advantage over Rajasthan thanks to a superior Net Run Rate, but slipping up here could undo all that hard work.
Prediction: Chennai Super Kings to win convincingly.
Match 60: Rajasthan Royals vs Kolkata Knight Riders – May 16
This is shaping up to be one of the juiciest fixtures of the week. KKR simply cannot afford another defeat after their loss to RCB, while Rajasthan are desperate to stay inside touching distance of the top four.
Both sides have blown hot and cold this season, so this one could easily come down to whichever bowling attack handles the pressure better in the death overs.
Prediction: Rajasthan Royals to edge a thriller at home.
Match 61: Gujarat Titans vs Sunrisers Hyderabad – May 17
This is the heavyweight showdown, boet. The sort of match you pretend not to care about, then suddenly realise it’s 1am and you’re shouting at the TV in your slippers.
Gujarat Titans smashed SRH earlier in the season with a brutal 82-run win. But Sunrisers now arrive with revenge on their minds. GT skipper Shubman Gill has led brilliantly this year. While South Africa’s own Heinrich Klaasen has been absolutely ridiculous with the bat.
Klaasen has been one of the stars of IPL 2026. Hammering attacks all over India and reminding everyone why SA cricket supporters rate him so highly. If he gets going, even the safest totals start looking dodgy.
Prediction: Gujarat Titans to win a high-scoring classic.
Match 62: Delhi Capitals vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru – May 18
Virat Kohli looks completely locked in right now after blasting an unbeaten century against KKR. The RCB veteran continues to rewrite records and has powered Bengaluru into genuine title-contender territory again.
Delhi still have slim playoff hopes alive, but they’re running out of road quickly. RCB, meanwhile, will want to keep building momentum and secure that crucial top-two finish heading into the knockout phase.
Prediction: Royal Challengers Bengaluru to continue their winning run.
The IPL going into critical stage
RCB came into IPL 2026 as defending champions after finally breaking their title drought in 2025, and they’re looking every bit capable of going back-to-back. But Gujarat Titans have arguably been the most complete side in the competition calm, clinical and properly ruthless.
For South African cricket fans, there’s also plenty of local flavour to enjoy. Heinrich Klaasen continues to dominate for SRH, while several Proteas stars remain central figures across the tournament. And let’s be honest, half of Mzansi has adopted IPL teams by now anyway.
The next five days are going to be massive for the IPL playoff race, and by next week we should have a far clearer picture of who’s heading to the knockouts and who’s booking early flights home.
