Norway’s Return to the World Stage: The Road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup

After 28 long years in the footballing wilderness, Norway are back. The Scandinavian nation has secured its place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Just the fourth World Cup appearance in the country’s history, but arguably the most meaningful. Norway were placed in UEFA Qualification Group I alongside Estonia, Israel, Italy, and Moldova, competing in a home-and-away round-robin format from March to November 2025. On paper, the group had a clear heavyweight in Italy. In reality, Norway blew the group wide open.

They racked up an impressive 37 goals while conceding just five across their eight qualifiers. A return that highlights both attacking firepower and defensive discipline under head coach Ståle Solbakken. Finishing as group winners secured automatic qualification, while Italy were left facing the dreaded play-offs yet again. A continuing a worrying trend after missing both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

No conversation about Norway starts anywhere else but Erling Haaland. The Manchester City forward was relentless in qualifying, finishing as one of Europe’s top scorers and delivering match-winning performances throughout the campaign.

At 26 during the tournament, Haaland will arrive at the World Cup at the peak of his powers. A terrifying prospect for defenders. If he carries this form into the tournament, Norway instantly become one of the most dangerous attacking sides in the competition.

Alongside him, Martin Ødegaard continues to dictate play with elite vision and composure. The Arsenal captain is the creative heartbeat of this team, and his connection with Haaland gives Norway a cutting edge few nations can match.

Add Alexander Sørloth into the mix, and Norway boast a genuinely dangerous front line. This tournament marks the first time this attacking core gets to perform together on the biggest stage something Norwegian fans have been waiting years to see.

There’s quality beyond the front three too, with Julian Ryerson offering consistency and attacking support from fullback, rounding out a squad that’s far more balanced than in previous generations.

Norway won’t have it easy in North America. Group I sees them drawn alongside France, Senegal, and Iraq, with matches scheduled between June 16 and 26, 2026.

France are the obvious giants. Stacked with world-class talent and led by Kylian Mbappé, they’ll be strong favourites to top the group. Senegal bring physicality, pace, and tournament experience, making them a serious contender for progression. Iraq, while underdogs, have a reputation for being difficult to break down and cannot be overlooked.

With the expanded format, the top two teams plus the best third-placed sides progress to the round of 32, giving Norway a realistic pathway to the knockouts even if they don’t win the group.

Let’s be realistic. Topping the group ahead of France would be a major upset. But second place? That’s very much on the table.

The key clash will likely come against Senegal, in what could be a straight shootout for progression. If Norway can get something from that game, qualification to the round of 32 is well within reach.

Globally, Norway are starting to be taken seriously as a dark horse. With Haaland leading the line, Ødegaard pulling the strings, and a squad playing fearless, front-foot football, they have all the ingredients to make noise in this tournament.

They return to the world stage with a golden generation and nothing to lose and that’s exactly what makes them dangerous. After nearly three decades away, Norway aren’t just here to participate, they’re here to compete.
